Built for the scientist Émile Tassel and completed in 1893, the Hôtel Tassel is generally cited as the first town house conceived wholly in the Art Nouveau manner.

Its glazed central stairwell lets daylight fall through an open iron staircase whose railings sprout the sinuous 'whiplash' line, echoed in wall murals and floor mosaic.

Its plan also freed the urban interior from load-bearing walls.
